A business operated through a church is forcing its way into our residential neighborhood in the Tanque Verde Valley in east Tucson. John Fazio purchased 2.8 acres at 1902 N. Tanque Verde Loop Road with plans to build a church/reception hall. Fazio runs two other wedding businesses that are also available for parties and corporate events. The 1902 N. Tanque Verde Loop Road location has been dubbed "Reflections at Mesquite Grove". There are weddings booked for later this year!
Some concerns about the business in our neighborhood:
- John Fazio's property is crowded with old growth mesquites; many are already marked for removal to make room for 75 paved parking spaces.
- Alcohol is service available as “open bar”. Increasing the potential of alcohol related traffic incidents.
- Fazio’s 7am to 2am (as advertised on his website) parties with live DJs and hundreds of attendees (up to 250) will increase light and noise that is not consistent with the current nature of this rural neighborhood.
- Fazio is planning this church/business in a neighborhood that has few or none of his parishioners.
- The Fazio's property is "...entirely within a designated hydromesoriparian habitat" per Pima County, and in the flood plain.
- The proposed facility will increase traffic and create parking problems on this rural road clearly not designed for such a purpose.
- Tanque Verde Loop Road does not have an all-weather crossing. When the Tanque Verde Creek is flowing, the road is closed for up to several months during the winter. This will increase the potential for more motorists than usual to drive around barricades and attempt to cross the flooded creek.
- The Tanque Verde Valley is a natural greenbelt that serves as a wildlife corridor. An increase in noise, light, traffic, and tree removal could detrimentally affect the wildlife in this area.
- Fazio could potentially establish other wedding business facilities in ANY neighborhood in Tucson - Your neighborhood could be next!
